At this step of building your Leveled Research Library, you have one small reading group researching from the research library in your classroom. Other students are noticing and they want to research too! It is time to start growing your Leveled Research Library in your classroom to accommodate the "Monster" that is about to take over. Let it grow!
Where to find nonfiction books for The Leveled Research Library in your classroom?
This section may seem self-explanatory with finding books, but I seek out new online bookstores and other resources that I would like to share with you. I visit my school library and local library. I can order from amazon, place scholastic book orders, shop thrift stores, etc. Before you go and start ordering books from all those great places, including the affiliated links on my website, this website will provide you with two resources to help you find “right-fit” books. These two resources will maximize your online shopping and limit the returns through the mail. It will also save you planning time spent at the library and on the library’s website.

The first resource I have built for gathering books is my Pinterest page. I provided the link at the top of each page of this website. I have spent years pinning books into the red, yellow, green, and blue level boards for others to use as a resource. I have personally reviewed all of this books on each of the boards so I know they are leveled correctly. I am constantly finding more books and adding them to these boards. This is a great resource for finding new books for your Leveled Research Library. I use these boards as well to help add more books to my library.

Leveled Author, Book Series, and Publishers List:
This next resource is the only one of its kind out there for leveling nonfiction books. You can only find it here at “The Research Monster”. It is the Leveled Author, Book Series, and Publishers List. I created this list myself. I use it and update it all the time to find new nonfiction books for my Leveled Research Library.
My thinking when I started to compile this list was that every author has their own style of writing. They are hired to write books based on their style of writing. If an author writes a series of red level books and then another series of nonfiction books, chances are the second series will also be at the red level of one sentence every two pages. I have found sometimes that authors will be a red and yellow level writer or a green and blue level writer. Once in a while I have found an author to write across two or more levels that are not consecutive. As readers, we have our favorite fiction authors. As a nonfiction reader, I have my favorite nonfiction authors.
When I search the internet for books from my favorite book companies, I sometimes type in the name of an author to see what books they have for sale by that author. When I order the books, I know that I am probably going to receive a book for the level of my library that I had in mind when I ordered it.
|
I also use the Book Series and Publishers List to type in the name of a series to see what a website has for sale in that series. Again, when I order the book, it will probably arrive and fit into the level of my library I was planning.
By combining these three elements of a book and using them to find “right-fit” books for my Leveled Research Library, it makes the book shopping experience more enjoyable and less time consuming to continue to build the research library in my classroom.

**This list does not reflect the quality of writing of these authors. It reflects their style of writing as it would be leveled into a Leveled Research Library. It is meant as a compliment and to encourage the sales of nonfiction books through various outlets.**
Affiliated Book Companies:
When I started looking for companies to be an affiliate, I would google some of my favorite nonfiction books to see which websites were selling them. When I found a new website, I would use the Leveled Author, Book Series, and Publishers List to search by author or book series to see if their supply would fit the needs of teachers to build their Leveled Research Libraries. I also took into consideration their price-points and shipping options. I will explain more about each of my affiliates below to help build a Leveled Research Library in your classroom.
BookDepository.com
The Book Depository is a UK based company that has warehouses in Australia and England. They ship worldwide for FREE. They accept payment in several currencies and forms of payment including PayPal. I added them as an affiliate because they have a wide selection of books for my Leveled Research Library at good prices. Also, I have many international followers and the worldwide free shipping was a big draw for me to this company. They are an Amazon Company. Please click on my affiliated link below or on another page of this website to begin searching for books to build your Leveled Research Library.
BetterWorldBooks.com
I have used this book company extensively in the past when I ordered from another company and they were a seller on the site. They have an excellent selection of nonfiction books to stock Leveled Research Libraries around the globe. They offer FREE shipping worldwide, but they don’t blatantly state it on the website. They seem to only trade in U.S. dollars. They are a U.S. company with a warehouse in the state of Indiana. Their system makes it very easy to type in keywords and search for books using the Leveled Author, Book Series, and Publishers List. Please click on my affiliated link below to begin searching for books to build your Leveled Research Library.
ThriftBooks.com
This company is another U.S. based company based out of Washington state with warehouses across the country. They have a great selection of books to build your Leveled Research Library. They offer free shipping within the United States. They do ship internationally, but they charge per book. I have ordered books from this company before and I was very pleased with their prices, shipping, and quality of their used books. Please click on my affiliated link below or a Thrift Books icon on the side of this page to begin searching for books to build your Leveled Research Library.
Amazon.com
*** I am no longer an affiliate of Amazon due to low clicks on my website. I write about researching in the classroom. It doesn't exactly draw a huge crowd, but Amazon is still a great resource to find books for your research library. ***
I have Amazon on this list because I know teachers love it! For the benefits of finding books for the classroom, it is a great resource! I also shop on Amazon.com for books. I use the Leveled Author, Book Series, and Publishers List to search the site by author, book series, and publisher.
A Helpful Tip: From one teacher to another, have you created a public wish list for your classroom on Amazon.com? I just updated my wish list with books and contact information. I also added a description about my first grade class and what my students love to research from my Leveled Research Library. I am hoping to attract a donor that wants to contribute to the education system and in particular, my classroom. I had a friend-of-a-friend (don’t we all) who got books donated for every student in their school. It was such a big event, it even made the local news. If this story inspires you, please use my affiliated link below to connect to Amazon.
